Kenya, April 23, 2026 - Torrential rains and powerful winds have pounded Kenya’s Coast, displacing families, destroying homes and cutting off vital services in Mombasa and Kwale counties.
The Kenya Red Cross, in a statement posted on its X account, warned that, “Heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread disruption in Mombasa County and Kwale County.”
In Mombasa, the impact has been severe, with at least 103 households affected and nine families displaced in Jomvu, Kisauni, Changamwe and Likoni.
Freretown residents were left counting losses after strong winds tore through homes, ripping off rooftops, while floodwaters submerged low-lying areas. In Nyali, flash floods brought transport to a standstill, worsening the unfolding crisis.
Health services were also disrupted, with the Red Cross reporting that, “Jomvu Model Hospital and Tudor Sub-County Health Facility were inaccessible due to flooding,” raising concerns over access to urgent medical care.
In neighbouring Kwale County, five households were affected in Lungalunga and Vanga as relentless rains continued to pound the region.
