MOGADISHU (Dawan) – September 6, 2026 Somalia’s Defence Ministry said five Al-Shabaab commanders were among 14 members of the group killed in a military operation in Buula-Fulaay area of Bay region.
The operation was carried out on Thursday by the Somali National Army, including Danab special forces, in the Buula-Fulaay area, according to a statement issued by the Defence Ministry on Sunday.
The ministry identified the five commanders killed as Bishaar Mohamed Mukhtar, Ali Nur Mohamed Idris, Hussein Hassan Dahir, Nur Abdullahi Hashi and Omar Hassan Hussein.

Bishaar, also known as Sheikh Bishaar, was described by the ministry as Al-Shabaab’s judge for the Gedo region and a former judge in Bay and Lower Shabelle.The ministry said the other commanders held positions linked to militant operations, armed units and explosives networks in Bay region. It added that nine bodyguards accompanying the commanders were also killed.
Two other senior Al-Shabaab figures were seriously wounded in the operation, according to the ministry. They included Jafar Abu Hamza, whom the ministry identified as Al-Shabaab’s governor for Bay region, and Hassan Ibrahim, an official linked to the group’s taxation and finance operations.
