Somalia, 26 December 2025 The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan has announced that the vote counting for the Banadir Region local council elections held yesterday has been completed.
“The last polling station closed at 2:30 PM yesterday, and all counting has been done at the polling stations. We are now in the process of compiling the numbers from the districts, after which the official results, including the distribution of seats among the political parties, will be announced,” Hassan told the media today.\
Though the provisional results are expected to be announced soon, the commission stated that the final figures will be released in accordance with all the electoral procedures and regulations.

The chairman confirmed the elections were conducted smoothly, commending the security agencies and the electoral staff for their efforts in ensuring a successful poll.
Mogadishu hosted its first one-person, one-vote election in over 55 years yesterday, however opposition parties have maintained that the exercise was not free and fair, claiming that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Justice and Solidarity Party controlled the whole process.
As per the electoral law, once the results are announced, the NIEBC will submit them to the Supreme Court of Somalia for a final, binding decision. A total of 20 political parties competed for 390 seats across 16 districts in the Banadir region.
