Somalia, 11 June 2026 – The Banadir Regional Administration has ordered cattle owners to remove free-roaming animals from Mogadishu roads, citing concerns over public health, traffic safety and the cleanliness of the capital.
Banadir Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungab issued the order after consultations with cattle owners, the administration said in a statement.
The administration added that cattle roaming on major roads had caused sanitation problems, disrupted traffic, contributed to accidents and damaged trees planted trees planted to beautify the city.
It also said the animals posed health risks because they often feed on waste, plastic bags and other unsafe materials before their milk and meat are sold to the public.

Under the order, cattle owners have been given two weeks, from June 13 to June 27, to move their animals into designated enclosures or other appropriate areas.
After the deadline, any cattle found on Mogadishu’s roads will be seized, the statement added.
The administration said the measure was part of efforts to improve cleanliness, safety and urban development in the capital.
