Ethiopia, July 8, 2026 - The African Union (AU) has called for increased political and financial support for the AU Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), saying the mission's future must be guided by clear strategic objectives to safeguard security gains made in the Horn of Africa nation.
Addressing an informal consultation of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) on Wednesday AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said strengthening AUSSOM was critical to reinforcing African ownership of peace and security while ensuring sustainable financing for African-led peace support operations.
Youssouf said the sacrifices made by troop-contributing countries (TCCs) should be honoured by ensuring the mission remains sustainable, adaptable and capable of responding to evolving security challenges in Somalia.
"Honouring the sacrifices of troop-contributing countries requires safeguarding the gains achieved in Somalia through a mission that is sustainable, adaptable and fit for purpose," he said.
The AU chief also urged member states to fast-track the operationalisation of the African Union Peace Fund, implement the 0.2 per cent import levy designed to finance AU programmes, and increase voluntary contributions to reduce dependence on external donors.
He said strengthening Africa's own financing mechanisms would enable the continent to respond more effectively to conflicts and security threats through African-led initiatives.
The consultation, chaired by Uganda which holds the rotating chairmanship of the AU Peace and Security Council for July, focused on the future direction of AUSSOM and the support required to sustain stability in Somalia.
AUSSOM succeeded the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and is mandated to support the Somali government in combating the Al-Shabaab insurgency, strengthening national security institutions and creating conditions for long-term peace and stability. The mission continues to rely on troops contributed by several African countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Egypt.
