Nigeria, 29 December 2025 - World-renowned British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on Monday morning in Makun, Ogun State, Nigeria, local authorities and multiple news outlets report.
The crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Sagamu Interchange, one of the country’s busiest highways.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports, a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck near Danco Filling Station around 11am local time, in circumstances that traffic authorities are still investigating.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other emergency responders were among the first to arrive at the scene.

Police and local media have confirmed that two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while Joshua, who was reportedly seated in the rear of the SUV, sustained only minor injuries and was taken to an undisclosed hospital for further medical evaluation. Footage circulating online shows the former two-time world heavyweight champion conscious and being assisted from the wreckage, surrounded by emergency responders.
The news has sparked an outpouring of concern and support from boxing fans worldwide, particularly given Joshua’s Nigerian heritage and strong ties to the country. Joshua, 36, recently returned to prominence after a high-profile sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025. He was reportedly visiting Nigeria following that bout, which drew significant global attention.
