Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has claimed responsibility for two separate airstrikes in Somalia, saying the operations were carried out in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia against the militant group al Shabaab.
In a statement issued on September 1, AFRICOM said the strikes took place on August 30, 2025. According to the command, one strike occurred in Jubaland, approximately 40 kilometers north-east of Kismayo, while the other took place in the Shabelle region, about 50 kilometers south-west of Mogadishu.
The command said the operations were conducted in partnership with the Somali Armed Forces as part of ongoing efforts to degrade al Shabaab’s capacity to launch attacks inside Somalia and beyond.
“AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade al Shabaab’s ability to threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad,” the statement read.
The command did not release details about the units or assets involved, citing operational security, and no independent confirmation has been provided regarding the casualties or impact of the strikes.
The U.S. military regularly announces air operations in Somalia in support of Somali and African Union forces, though independent verification of targets and outcomes is often limited.
