Ethiopia, 3 December 2025 — The African Union has announced that the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, will host the continent’s first-ever African Energy Efficiency Summit on 10–11 December, bringing together high-level leaders and experts in Africa’s energy transition.
African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Lerato Mataboge, said the summit aims to solidify Africa’s energy efficiency agenda by strengthening strategic partnerships and accelerating the implementation of the African Energy Strategy.
He added that the summit will also feature the official launch of the African Energy Efficiency Alliance, which aims to boost the continent’s energy productivity by 50 per cent by 2050 and 70 per cent by 2063.

Meanwhile, Bahru Olgira, Deputy Director General of Ethiopia’s Petroleum and Energy Authority, stated that the country is developing a national program to improve electricity efficiency amid growing needs for major investment in energy infrastructure.
He noted that the government is expanding electricity supply through multiple sources to ensure sustainable access to power.
Olgira emphasized that Ethiopia has vast renewable energy potential and is working to strengthen its position as a regional hub for clean energy in East Africa, alongside efforts to enhance regional power interconnection with neighboring countries.
