Somalia, 6 December 2025 – Somaliland has accused the Federal Government of Somalia of inciting and participating in the violent protests witnessed in Borama City, claiming that the actions of Mogadishu have intensified the unrest in the Awdal region.
The accusation comes after the protests led to casualties, including deaths and injuries, with Somaliland asserting that the Somali government’s actions were involved.
A press release issued today by Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Federal Government of Somalia is engaging in deliberate actions aimed at inflaming political tensions, spreading misinformation, and sowing divisions within Somaliland’s peaceful communities.
"The Government of the Republic of Somaliland strongly condemns the interference and destabilizing actions of the Federal Government of Somalia in relation to the situation in Borama.
“The actions of the Somali administration are deliberate, coordinated, and clearly intended to inflame tensions, spread false information, and widen divisions within Somaliland’s peaceful society," the statement said.

Somaliland emphasized that it will not allow the Somali government to interfere in its internal affairs, particularly attempts to divide the unity and stability of Somaliland’s society.
The statement was in response to the Somali government's earlier statement urging Somaliland to listen to the concerns of Borama residents.
"We call on the Somaliland administration to listen to the people of the region, to respect their feelings, and to resolve the grievances of the people responsibly while avoiding any actions that would worsen the situation," the statement from Somalia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
The Commander of the Somaliland Police, Major General Abdirahman Abdullahi Hassan, also warned yesterday that Somaliland’s security forces would firmly prevent any actions that would lead to further violence.
The protests in Borama began Thursday afternoon after Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Ahmed Yassin Sheikh Ali, stated that the Xeer-Ciise event was to be held in the city of Saylac in the Awdal region.
