Kenya, 29 October 2026 - Thirteen motor vehicles were impounded on the Southern Bypass overnight after an inter-agency team carried out a safety compliance check along the busy highway.
The operation, conducted Wednesday night and in the wee hours of Thursday, targeted drivers and vehicles flouting road safety regulations.
Officers flagged a string of violations that they said posed a danger to motorists and other road users.
Among the major offences were drivers found operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol and others behind the wheel with expired driving licences.
Some vehicles had expired inspection stickers, while others were being driven without insurance or in breach of their insurance terms.
The team also detained vehicles with broken headlights and cracked windscreens, defects that significantly reduce visibility, particularly at night and when there is mist.

“Major safety concerns were observed during the check, and the vehicles were detained for non-compliance,” the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said in an update on the operation.
The crackdown comes as authorities step up enforcement against traffic offences, with drink-driving and the use of unroadworthy vehicles remaining leading contributors to road crashes.
The owners and drivers of the detained vehicles are expected to be processed in line with traffic laws before the vehicles can be released.
