Portugal, 12 November 2025 - Portugal legend and Al Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo has officially confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the end of his decorated professional football career.
Now 40 years old, Ronaldo revealed in a recent global summit that he intends to retire within "one or two years," explaining that spending more time with his family is the reason behind his decision to step away from the sport after over two decades at the top level.
Retirement Announcement and FIFA World Cup Plans
Ronaldo’s words have ended speculation about his future.
He said, "I feel very good at this moment. I score goals, I still feel quick and sharp. But, let's be honest, what I mean by soon is probably one or two years".
Pointing to the next World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Portuguese icon added, "Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old," confirming that he would not play in any tournaments after 2026.
If selected, Ronaldo will compete in a record-breaking sixth World Cup for Portugal, aiming to win a FIFA World Cup title, the last major honour missing from his collection.
Career Achievements and Legacy
With over 950 career goals for club and country, Ronaldo's statistics are unmatched.
He remains the highest international goalscorer with over 140 goals and has cemented his place among football's legends.
His five Ballon d'Or awards reflect a consistent career.
He has also won multiple Golden Boots and set UEFA Champions League records for most goals, appearances, and victories.
During his time with Portugal, Ronaldo led the national team to victory at Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, delivering his country their first major football trophies.
On the club stage, Ronaldo’s career began at Sporting CP before he joined Manchester United in 2003. His spell in England saw him win three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. A transfer to Real Madrid in 2009 led to even greater heights: he became their all-time top scorer with 450 goals, won four Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles.
He then went to Juventus in Italy, bringing two Serie A titles, before his move to Al Nassr extended his impact to the Saudi Pro League, where he remains a prolific goalscorer.
Personal Reflections and Future Plans
Although still performing at a high level with Al Nassr, recently extending his contract until 2027, Ronaldo says his focus is now on enjoying his remaining football years without added pressure.
He reflected, "I gave everything for football. I have many records, and I’m really proud. So let’s enjoy the moment, live the moment."
Ronaldo also expressed hope that his son Cristiano Jr, an emerging talent in Portugal’s youth ranks, might choose his own football path.
As Ronaldo looks ahead to his final World Cup and eventual retirement, the global football community awaits his farewell with admiration and a sense of nostalgia.
His extraordinary achievements, leadership, and competitive spirit have inspired millions, ensuring his legacy will endure long beyond his time on the pitch.
