Somalia, 14 January 2026 Somaliland’s political parties have rallied behind President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro warning of war if attacked by Somalia, as regional tensions escalate over Israel's recognition of the self-governing state.
The declaration followed a meeting convened by President Irro in Hargeisa, today, to discuss what Somaliland described as “a new phase” following Israel’s recognition.
The meeting, attended by the leadership of the Waddani, Kaah and Kulmiye parties, focused on Somaliland’s political, security and diplomatic situation. Particular attention was given to reactions stemming from Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and the positions taken by the Federal Government of Somalia, several allied countries, and international organizations.

President Irro shared a briefing with the parties, stressing that the current situation requires unity and full preparedness. He stated that Somaliland would not tolerate external threats and is ready to defend what it claims as its existence and sovereignty.
“If Somalia attacks Somaliland, it will be defeated more severely than it was during its previous offensives,” Irro said.
During the meeting, both opposition and ruling parties reiterated support for President Irro and his government, pledging to play their political and societal roles to ensure Somaliland achieves its local and international objectives.
Although Somaliland has repeatedly said its stands for peaceful coexistence, the warning issued during the meeting indicates that its leadership views the current situation as one requiring military and political preparedness, further deepening tensions in the Horn of Africa.
