Kenya, 14 January 2026 - Kenya is experiencing a surge in cruise tourism, thanks in part to the country’s new multiple-entry Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system designed for cruise passengers. The simplified process has made it easier for international visitors to enter the country, encouraging repeat arrivals and strengthening Kenya’s appeal as a maritime destination.
This week, the Port of Mombasa welcomed over 2,000 international tourists aboard two luxury vessels, MV Azamara Journey and EUROPA Valletta, arriving on Monday and Tuesday.
The arrivals highlight a growing trend in cruise tourism, which the government reports expanded by 140 percent by the end of 2024, bringing economic opportunities to coastal communities.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano emphasised that the new ETA system has played a key role in driving this growth.
“By simplifying entry for cruise passengers, we are making Kenya more accessible and attractive to visitors from around the world,” she said, noting the benefits for both tourism and local economies.
On Tuesday, the luxury cruise liner MS Europa docked at the Port of Mombasa, marking the third cruise call of the year.
The vessel, captained by Tom Petzold, arrived from Zanzibar with 286 passengers on board.

Port Captain East Africa, Dr Bwanaheri Lali, officially welcomed the ship at Berth 11.
Earlier, MV Azamara Journey had docked with 663 passengers and 300 crew members, underscoring the busy start to the cruise season.
The arrivals demonstrate Kenya’s increasing competitiveness in the East African maritime tourism sector and the growing preference for the country as a cruise destination.
With the ETA system easing travel formalities and streamlining entry procedures, the government anticipates continued growth in cruise arrivals, benefiting both international tourists and local coastal economies.
The enhanced accessibility also positions Kenya as a key hub for cruise tourism in the region, attracting visitors from around the world.
