Somalia, January 22, 2026 The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) Wednesday welcomed the Federal Government of Somalia’s announcement of a national consultative forum and its invitation to the Somali Future Council, urging all political actors to participate in inclusive talks ahead of upcoming elections.
The UN mission said it supports efforts to reach broad consensus on participatory and transparent elections before constitutional mandates expire.
“We reaffirm our support for an inclusive dialogue aimed at achieving broad consensus on participatory and transparent elections before constitutional mandates expire,” UNTMIS said in a statement posted on social media platform X.
The mission encouraged the Somali Future Council, a key opposition alliance, to respond positively to the government’s invitation and urged all political actors to engage constructively in the planned discussions.

Separately today , the UK in Somalia welcomed the announcement of the national forum, scheduled to take place in Mogadishu in February. It encouraged the Somali Future Council to participate and urged all political stakeholders to work toward consensus to ensure Somalia’s stability and prosperity.
Somalia continues to face disagreements over the electoral framework and timing, with opposition groups expressing concern about proposed reforms.
The national consultative forum is expected to bring together the country’s major political actors to discuss the electoral process and broader political issues ahead of the expiration of current constitutional mandates.
