ABU DHABI, September 26, 2026 The United Arab Emirates condemned what it said were attacks by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and an armed alliance against Ethiopian federal forces, and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
In a statement issued on Friday, the UAE foreign ministry also condemned the seizure of airports in Tigray and military escalation in neighbouring Afar and Amhara, saying the developments threatened Ethiopia’s unity and stability.
Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan expressed solidarity with Ethiopia’s government and rejected attempts to change the country’s constitutional order through force, the statement said.

He called for the protection of civilians, dialogue and adherence to the Pretoria peace agreement, signed by Ethiopia’s government and the TPLF in 2022 to end their two-year war.
The statement follows the announcement earlier this week of an alliance of seven Ethiopian armed groups, including the TPLF, formed to oppose Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. The groups accuse the government of centralising power and marginalising Ethiopia’s regions.
