MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – April 25, 2025 — Turkey has significantly increased its military footprint in Somalia by deploying an additional 500 troops in response to recent Al-Shabaab attacks near Mogadishu, according to a report by Middle East Eye.
The reinforcements are part of Turkey’s growing commitment to supporting Somalia’s security forces. The new troops are tasked with protecting the TURKSOM military base — a key Turkish facility in Mogadishu — safeguarding Mogadishu’s port, and supporting drone operations, including the deployment of Bayraktar TB2 and Akinci drones for security missions.
Support Focused on Training and Protection
Turkish forces will continue to assist in training Somali security forces while ensuring the protection of Turkish interests and infrastructure within Somalia. Sources close to the Turkish government confirmed that while Turkish forces are providing critical operational support, they are not directly participating in combat against Al-Shabaab unless explicitly authorized by the Turkish parliament.
Strengthening Somalia's Security Sector
The expansion highlights Turkey’s firm commitment to aiding Somalia in its fight against terrorism. Turkish military drones have already played an active role in intelligence and support missions to bolster Somali-led counterterrorism efforts.
