1 January 2026 - The just concluded year 2025 has seen recognition of some of the most outstanding players in the global remittance sector, with leadership and innovation taking centre stage.
Among those honoured is Tawakal Express Chief Executive Officer Zakarie Hashi, one of the youngest in the industry.
At the Somali Hero Awards 2025, Hashi was recognised with the Best CEO in the Social Entrepreneur Award, in acknowledgment of his outstanding contribution as a change-maker through his leadership and social impact initiatives across the globe.
Hashi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics from Yarmouk University in Jordan and a Master of Science Degree from Western Michigan University.

The award marks a significant milestone for Tawakal Express, a company that has built a trusted reputation in global remittances since its founding in 2003.

App-based transactions, digital wallets, and enhanced online services are central to the company’s expansion plans as global reliance on mobile and digital financial solutions continues to rise.
Hashi notes that his focus is anchored on several key priorities, including expanding mobile applications and digital wallets to meet the growing demand for seamless remittance services.
“These also include strengthening compliance and data security frameworks to meet evolving regulatory standards, and fostering strategic partnerships with global mobile money platforms such as M-Pesa, MTN, and Airtel,” he said.
These partnerships are expected to significantly enhance cross-border remittance services, particularly for customers in North America and Europe, while improving speed, affordability, and accessibility for recipients in Africa and beyond.
As Tawakal Express continues to evolve under his stewardship, the company is positioning itself as a leading force in the future of digital remittances, reinforcing its commitment to connecting communities and empowering livelihoods worldwide.
