Kenya, 11 May 2026 - Pet adoption in Kenya is steadily growing, particularly in urban areas such as Nairobi, as more people embrace responsible pet ownership and the “adopt, don’t shop” movement.
Alongside this shift, pet care organisations are focusing not only on helping animals find homes, but also on ensuring new pet parents are well prepared for the lifelong responsibility that comes with caring for a pet.
According to Judy Gachumi from PetStore Kenya, adoption often happens during major life changes.
“Pet adoption usually happens during major life moments like moving into a new home, starting a family, living alone, or seeking companionship,” she explains.
She adds that “The biggest triggers are emotional connection, lifestyle stability, and growing awareness around responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.”
Gachumi notes that many adopters arrive already looking for starter kits and guidance, showing they are emotionally prepared for long-term care.
Nutrition and preventive healthcare are central to this preparation, especially for young pets. PetStore Kenya offers a range of kitten and puppy food options designed to support healthy growth, immunity, and development.
Kitten food brands such as Bonnie, Reflex, Spectrum Ultra-Premium, Proline, and Royal Canin are formulated to meet the nutritional needs of growing kittens. Similarly, puppy food options including Royal Canin Puppy, Reflex Puppy Food, Bonnie Puppy Food, and Trendline Puppy Food help support bone development, muscle growth, and overall vitality during the early stages of life.
Judy emphasises the importance of education during the first weeks of pet ownership.
“The first few weeks really set the tone for the whole relationship with a pet,” she says.
“Good care from day one helps pets feel safe, builds routine, and prevents common issues like poor feeding habits, anxiety, or behavioural confusion.”
She adds humorously, “The cute phase is real, but so is the ‘why is this puppy chewing everything in sight?’ phase.”
Beyond nutrition, PetStore Kenya promotes a holistic approach to pet care that includes grooming, training, exercise, and preventive healthcare.
Regular brushing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and routine vet visits are essential for maintaining long-term wellness and preventing common illnesses.
More from Kenya
The company also stocks easy-to-administer healthcare essentials for cats and dogs, including deworming treatments and tick and flea control products, making preventive care more accessible for pet parents.
PetStore Kenya further supports adopters through educational resources such as starter guides, in-store learning tools, digital content, and community outreach programs.
“We support adoption organisations by helping create a smoother transition for new pet parents and rescued animals,” Judy explains.
“We educate adopters, recommend essential care products, and offer starter bundles for newly adopted pets.”
One example of this long-term support is a family who adopted a Kenyan Shepherd named Siku-Kuu from KSPCA.
“They were excited but overwhelmed,” Judy recalls.
“We helped them with nutrition, routine, and settling-in basics, and told them, ‘If you get stuck, just call us, we’re here.’”
More than three years later, PetStore Kenya continues to support the family throughout their pet care journey.
Despite growing awareness around adoption, rescue organisations in Kenya still face challenges such as limited resources and infrastructure constraints.
PetStore Kenya helps bridge these gaps through food donations, subsidised supplies, kennel improvements, healthcare support, and participation in community vaccination drives, while also amplifying rescue stories to help more animals find homes.
Taking a personal initiative, Judy says the company hopes to build a stronger ecosystem of education and support around pet adoption.
“Our goal is to move from one-time adoption support to a system that continuously educates, equips, and walks with pet parents,” Judy says.
“So responsible pet ownership becomes the norm, not the exception.”
Adopting a pet is not just about bringing an animal home, but about understanding their needs, committing to their care, and growing alongside them.
