South Sudan, 2 July 2026 – South Sudan’s Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol met the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)’s Special Envoy for South Sudan Moussa Djama Ali in Juba on Tuesday to discuss peace and preparations for December elections.
The talks focused on the implementation of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, the electoral process, political dialogue among key stakeholders and conditions required to complete the transition period, according to officials.
Abdelbagi praised IGAD’s continued support for South Sudan’s peace process, describing the regional bloc as a key partner in supporting both the government and the people of South Sudan.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully implementing the peace agreement and holding what he described as free, fair, peaceful and credible elections in December.South Sudan is preparing for a crucial vote as it seeks to advance its political transition under the Revitalized Peace Agreement, which ended years of civil conflict and laid the foundation for power-sharing and institutional reforms.

Since the agreement was signed, IGAD has played a central role in supporting implementation of the peace deal and facilitating dialogue among political actors.
Ambassador Ali reiterated IGAD’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s peace process and maintaining close cooperation with authorities in Juba.
He said the regional bloc would continue working with South Sudanese leaders to support a stable and inclusive political transition ahead of the planned elections.
The upcoming vote is expected to mark a key milestone for South Sudan, though concerns remain over delays in implementing critical provisions of the peace agreement, including security reforms and political arrangements.
