Somaliland, 29 October 2025 — International logistics company, DP World, has officially handed over modern laboratory to Sheikh University of Natural Sciences and Technology (SUNSAT) to boost the country's scientific research capacity.
The handover ceremony held at the university campus in Sheikh district, was attended by senior regional and local officials, including the governors of Saaxil and Togdheer regions, the mayor of Berbera, Sheikh district officials, and representatives from DP World.
The Mayor of Sheikh, Ismail Habeeb, and the Mayor of Berbera, Abdishakur Mahamud Hasan, praised the project, describing it as a major step in advancing education and scientific research in Somaliland.
“This laboratory is a vital contribution from DP World to support the future of Somaliland’s knowledge and education,” said Mayor Habeeb.
The Managing Director of DP World Horn of Africa, Supacha Wattanaveerachai, stated that the project is part of the company’s broader plan to support education and youth skills development.
“DP World believes that the young generation of Somaliland is the key to the country’s progress. Our investment in education is an investment in life,” he said.
Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Sacad Ali Shire, also highlighted the importance of recognizing institutions and partners who make tangible contributions to the advancement of education.
He called on the public to collectively safeguard national assets and the newly built research facilities in their communities.
The Chairman of the Somaliland Cultural Center, Jama Muse Jama, who is also a member of the university’s construction committee, described the new laboratory as “a new beginning for promoting knowledge and scientific experimentation among students.”
The laboratory built by DP World is one of the most advanced science facilities in the country and expected to significantly enhance research capacity and science learning for students at SUNSAT University in Sheikh.
DP World, which manages and operates the Port of Berbera, has previously invested heavily in Somaliland’s infrastructure and continues to play a key role in education and community development projects across the region.
