Hargeisa (Dawan Africa) – Somaliland’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has ordered telecom operators to review recent service changes, including higher internet prices, after an emergency meeting with Telesom, Somtel, and Soltelco.
In a statement dated 9 August 2025, the ministry confirmed that companies must reassess the adjustments made to communication services.“Telecommunication companies are instructed to review the changes they have made to communication services,” the statement said.
It also announced the formation of a joint technical committee, comprising representatives from the ministry and the operators, to investigate the reasons behind the changes. The statement urged citizens to preserve peace and public order, warning that those inciting or organising activities threatening security would face legal consequences.
According to service data from Telesom and Somtel, the price of unlimited 24-hour internet bundles has doubled from $0.50 to $1, while Weekly bundles that previously offered 2GB for $0.50 now provide 1.3GB for the same price. The changes have drawn strong public criticism in recent days, with many residents using social media to express frustration. Some have accused the companies of colluding to fix prices, a practice they say would undermine free market competition.
The Somaliland Police Force said it had received reports of online mobilisation for demonstrations against the price hikes and reminded the public that all gatherings require written approval from the Ministry of Interior and Security.
