Somalia, 15 October 2025 — The Federal Parliament of Somalia is holding elections to select nine representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Statement from the House of the People on Tuesday said the joint selection and registration committee confirmed that candidate registration and certification have been completed. All candidates meet the legal requirements for the election.
“The committee has officially finalized the registration and certification of candidates, and the election of Somalia’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly is scheduled to take place tomorrow,” the statement from the House of the People read.
Candidates for the nine seats can be drawn from current members of parliament or from outside the legislature. Any MP elected will automatically resign from their parliamentary seat. Those holding executive positions, such as ministers, are ineligible to run.
The election is a key step for Somalia to participate actively in the EALA, strengthen regional cooperation, and enhance its role within the East African Community.
