Somalia, 14 April 2026 Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has launched voter registration in Middle Shabelle’s Mahadaay district, as part of efforts to implement direct elections in the country.
The launch event was attended by district officials, members of the local administration, and various segments of the community, many of whom formed long queues to register as voters.
Officials in Mahadaay described the registration process as a historic step, noting that it provides citizens with an opportunity to directly elect their future leaders.

Mahadaay District Commissioner, Ahmed Hussein Afrah, called on residents of the district and surrounding areas to actively participate in the registration process, urging them to demonstrate patience and unity.
Hirshabelle State MP Libaan Ali Hubey said the people of Mahadaay are ready to elect representatives of their choice through direct elections.
The voter registration comes as Somalia intensifies efforts to transition to a one-person, one-vote electoral system after years of indirect elections based on clan delegates.
