Somalia, 2 April 2026 Somalia's Deputy Prime Minister arrived in Baidoa on Thursday hours after being appointed South West State’s interim leader, pledging to pursue “real reconciliation” and restore stability following recent political tensions in the region.
Jibril Abdirashid Haji was received by federal and regional officials, lawmakers and residents upon arrival in the administrative capital.
Speaking shortly after landing, Haji promised to prioritize inclusive reconciliation efforts involving religious leaders, traditional elders and all segments of society.
“We have come here to achieve real reconciliation,” he said.
He added that the process would be carried out in cooperation with the people of South West State and would aim to address both security and governance challenges.
“There will be no individual or clan targeted,” he said, stressing the need to rebuild trust among communities.

The interim leader also called on residents to work closely with security institutions to stabilise the region.
“We call on the people of South West State to cooperate with security agencies to ensure stability,” he added.
Haji said government institutions would continue operating as before, adding that any gaps in administration would be addressed to maintain continuity.
He also praised Somali national forces for recent operations in and around Baidoa, urging the public to support ongoing efforts to secure the region.
The visit comes after his appointment as interim president of the federal member state by Prime Minister Hamza Barre, a move aimed at ensuring continuity of governance following the resignation of President Abdiaziz Laftagareen after fallout with the federal government.
