Somalia, 2 December 2025 – The first group of Sudanese students awarded government scholarships to study in Somalia has arrived in the country, the Federal Ministry of Education said Tuesday.Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir welcomed the students, noting the historic ties between the countries. “Your presence reminds us of the years when Sudan welcomed thousands of Somali students. You are welcome in the country and we hope you will find all the support and goodwill here,” he said.The students were awarded scholarships by the Somali government and will pursue their studies at the Somali National University.Speaking after their arrival, the Sudanese Ambassador to Somalia, Abdulrahman Khalil Ahmed Abakr Afandi, welcomed the initiative and thanked Somalia for their hospitality.“We are happy with this initiative. This is a new and important experience for our students, and we hope this first group will be followed by many more.“We thank the Somali government and the university for this opportunity, especially during the difficult circumstances Sudan has faced.”Abdulkadir also thanked the Somali National University, and the Sudanese Embassy for facilitating the students’ travel and enrolment.According to Ministry another group is expected to arrive next week under the same programme.The development comes after the Ministry of Education announced in October last year that Somalia would offer 30 scholarships to Sudanese students, citing the historical support Sudan provided to Somalis during the civil war period.
