Doha (Dawan Africa) - The Federal Government of Somalia has urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to swiftly operationalize the Special OIC Fund for the Development of Somalia, citing delays that have limited access to coordinated humanitarian and development assistance.
The call was made by Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, during the ministerial session of the OIC Contact Group on Somalia, held in Doha from July 27–28 and hosted by the State of Qatar.
“The government welcomed the recent adoption of the statutes of the OIC humanitarian funds, including the Special OIC Fund for the Development of Somalia, and urged its swift operationalization.” The ministry said.
The Somalia Development Fund, first proposed in 2011, was designed to mobilize OIC member state contributions toward Somalia’s peacebuilding, infrastructure, and service delivery priorities. The fund remains inactive.
Minister Abdisalam proposed the establishment of a Follow-Up Committee within the OIC Contact Group to monitor implementation and ensure pledges are translated into support.
The statement also reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to inclusive governance, economic reform, and long-term stability. The government thanked the State of Qatar and all OIC member countries for their continued solidarity.
