Somalia, 2 April 2026 Somalia’s federal government has urged Somaliland authorities to lead efforts to de-escalate clashes in the Awdal region, calling for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue.
The appeal followed a weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday.
“The government calls on the Somaliland administration to assume its responsibility in resolving the crisis and to play a leadership role in ending the clashes and stabilising the region,” the statement said.
The government also called on the parties involved in the fighting to halt hostilities unconditionally and pursue peaceful solutions.

“The Federal Government of Somalia strongly calls on the parties involved in the conflict in the Awdal region to cease hostilities unconditionally and embrace peace,” it added.
The call comes after days of clan clashes in parts of Awdal, where Somaliland authorities say people have been killed and others injured, although no confirmed casualty figures have been released.
Somalia’s government also appealed to traditional elders, religious leaders and community figures to support reconciliation efforts and help end the violence.
Officials said resolving the conflict through dialogue would be key to preventing further instability and addressing the root causes of recurring clashes in the region.
