Somalia, 2 December 2025 — Somalia and the United Kingdom held high-level discussions in Mogadishu on Tuesday focused on strengthening cooperation in human rights and advancing governance reforms.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre received in his office a senior UK delegation led by Eleanor Sanders, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative in Geneva.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Hamza congratulated the UK on its recent election to the UN Human Rights Council, and expressed appreciation for Britain’s continued support to Somalia, particularly in the lifting of the arms embargo, debt relief, and Somalia’s return to its seat on the UN Human Rights Council.
The Prime Minister briefed the delegation on Somalia’s progress in building national human rights institutions, including the establishment of the Independent Human Rights Commission, recently approved by both houses of parliament. He emphasized that the commissioners were selected based on merit, expertise, and experience.

Ambassador Sanders thanked the Prime Minister for the warm reception and commended Somalia for the progress recorded in the protection and promotion of human rights.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Prime Minister Hamza, accompanied by the Minister of Family and Human Rights, Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzumi, presented Ambassador Sanders with an honorary certificate in recognition of the UK’s longstanding support to Somalia.
