Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations have reached an agreement for Somalia to take full control of human rights and civilian protection responsibilities from the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) by October 2026.
The announcement came after a high-level workshop jointly organized by UNTMIS and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The workshop, which focused on human rights, civilian protection, and the Human Rights Due Diligence Policy, was co-chaired by Ambassador Yusuf Garaad on behalf of the Somali government and Mr. Raisedon Zenenga, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia.
Both parties highlighted the strong cooperation established between UNTMIS and Somali experts, emphasizing that this collaboration would help ease the transition process. The successful partnership over the years is expected to facilitate Somalia's assumption of full responsibility in ensuring the protection of human rights and civilians.
This transition is part of the broader exit strategy for UNTMIS, which is scheduled to complete its mandate by October 31, 2026, marking a key milestone in Somalia's growing capacity to handle critical national issues independently.
