Somalia, 27 December 2025 The Federal Government of Somalia has requested an urgent meeting with the member states of the Arab League to discuss Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
According to the Somali Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awale, the purpose of the meeting is for the Arab League Council to take a unified and clear stance in condemning and rejecting Israel’s decision.
He emphasized the need for Arab countries to show unity and full support for Somalia to defend the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to prevent any actions that threaten the stability of the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador Awale strongly condemned the statements and decisions made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling them irresponsible and a direct violation of the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia, its territorial integrity, and international law, as well as the United Nations Charter, Arab League resolutions, and African Union decisions.
He stressed that the recognition of Somaliland has no legal basis and is in violation of all international laws that uphold the respect for the sovereignty of states and the non-interference in their internal affairs.
The Arab League also issued a statement on Friday condemning Israel’s decision, with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, describing the move as an interference that poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the Horn of Africa.
