Somalia, 27 December 2025 The Federal Government of Somalia has formally requested an emergency meeting of the Arab League to address Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
Somalia’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awaare, said the request aims to secure a unified Arab League position condemning and rejecting Israel’s move. He stressed the need for collective Arab support to uphold Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning that the decision could destabilize the Horn of Africa.

The ambassador strongly criticized statements and decisions by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing them as irresponsible and a direct violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, Arab League resolutions, and decisions of the African Union. He added that the recognition of Somaliland has no legal basis under international law and contravenes the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
Separately, the Arab League issued a statement condemning Israel’s decision. The League’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, described the move as interference that poses a serious threat to security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
