Somalia, 3 April 2026 Somalia has launched the reconstruction of Somali National University’s Gaheyr Centre to improve higher education infrastructure and student services, officials said.
Education Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulqadir attended the launch event on Saturday, according to university officials, who said the project will be implemented in phases.
The Gaheyr Centre is the largest educational facility operated by the university in Mogadishu, stretching 800 metres from the Afgoye side and around 1,025 metres from the Madina side, covering more than one kilometre in total.
Rector Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed said the centre, which has been in operation since the 1970s, plays a central role in hosting the university’s faculties and students.
The first phase of the project will focus on renovating the perimeter wall, followed by construction of the main rectorate building, faculties, laboratories, and student services.
