Somalia, 7 April, 2026 Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports launched the Peace and Unity Sports Week in Mogadishu on Monday, marking the International Day of Sport and promoting unity through sports.
The federal government announced the week-long event to highlight the role of sport in uniting communities and strengthening peace across society.
The opening ceremony was held at Konis Stadium in the capital, where a series of sporting activities were held, including a women’s football match, a cycling race involving both male and female participants, and a darts competition.
The event was attended by Minister of Youth and Sports Abdiqadir Ali, First Deputy Speaker of the House of the People SadioYasin Haji Samatar, and Acting President of the Somali National Olympic Committee Su’ad Galoow.
Deputy Speaker Sadio inaugurated the event under this year’s theme: “Sport is a unifier of society and a solution to integration challenges.”

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister said sport plays a key role in social development and reflects the level of peace in Mogadishu.
“We also want you to play your part in aligning with the world and showcasing the peace in Somalia’s capital,” he said.
The ministry said the week will feature a range of activities, including peace runs, friendly matches, sports exhibitions, awareness campaigns, and forums promoting peace, unity and youth empowerment.
The Peace and Unity Sports Week is expected to boost social integration, encourage youth participation, and demonstrate the important role of sport in building a peaceful and united society.
