Istanbul (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s National Security Advisor, Hussein Moalim, took part in a security meeting in Istanbul on June 20, 2025, focused on regional security in the Horn of Africa. The meeting brought together former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, and Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran.
The discussions focused on addressing security challenges in the Horn of Africa, with a particular emphasis on combating extremism, especially the Al-Shabaab insurgency. The meeting also looked at how global geopolitical shifts are affecting the region’s security dynamics.
Moalim highlighted Somalia’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation to ensure stability and counter the threat posed by extremist groups. He emphasized the need for collective efforts from regional partners like Kenya, Egypt, and Turkey to address these challenges.
Kenya has been instrumental in Somalia’s security efforts, particularly through its role in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which has been key in securing areas and combating Al-Shabaab. Egypt has also contributed by providing military training, equipment, and support to Somali forces. Turkey’s involvement includes military training and counterterrorism operations, including drone strikes on Al-Shabaab targets.
The meeting underlined the importance of cooperation between these nations in securing the Horn of Africa’s future and ensuring long-term peace. As Somalia continues to strengthen ties with regional and global partners, these discussions mark a key step towards addressing the growing security challenges in the region.
