Somalia, 14 April 2026 Somalia and China have agreed to deepen bilateral ties and expand cooperation on security and trade following high-level talks in Mogadishu, Somalia’s foreign ministry said on Monday.
Somalia’s foreign minister, Abdisalam Ali, met with China’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Hu Changchun, at the ministry’s headquarters.
The ministry said China reiterated its support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, while highlighting long-standing ties between the two countries and Somalia’s strategic position as a gateway for trade and regional connectivity.
According to the ministry, Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation across key sectors.

China also expressed readiness to work closely with Somalia in advancing shared priorities, supporting Somalia-led initiatives and enhancing coordination on peace and security issues through multilateral platforms, the ministry said.
The ministry added that both sides discussed expanding cooperation in fisheries and the blue economy, sectors seen as key to driving sustainable growth and unlocking Somalia’s maritime potential.
Beijing has long been a major infrastructure player in East Africa, and the talks signal a renewed push to integrate Somalia into broader trade and security frameworks.
