MOGADISHU (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday has appointed Ambassador Awes Hagi Yusuf Ahmed as the country’s new National Security Adviser, following the resignation of Hussein Moallim Mohamud.
The announcement was made via the official Villa Somalia accounts on Social media , stating:
“H.E. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed Ambassador Awes Hagi Yusuf Ahmed as the new National Security Adviser.”
President Mohamud also extended his gratitude to the outgoing adviser for his service, acknowledging Hussein Moallim’s contributions to Somalia’s national security policy and coordination efforts during his tenure.
Ambassador Awes brings diplomatic experience to the post, having served as Somalia’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2023 to 2025.
His appointment comes at a time when Somalia faces complex and evolving security challenges. The Federal Government is currently engaged in military operations against Al-Shabaab in central and southern regions, while the militant group has reportedly reclaimed or expanded into areas previously vacated by security forces.. The transition of responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) also adds a new dimension to national security planning.
