MOGADISHU (Dawan), 17 August 2026 — The Federal Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, state education ministries and the Banadir Regional Administration have agreed on key reforms following a three-day National Education Consultation Meeting in Mogadishu.
The meeting, held Aug. 12-14, reviewed the state of education in Somalia, the performance of institutions and challenges facing the delivery of education services nationwide, according to the Ministry of Education.
Participants committed to strengthening cooperation between the Federal Ministry, Federal Member States and Banadir administration to improve the quality and delivery of education.
Agreements reached include measures to improve safety and hygiene standards in schools, strengthen national identity programs, and expand the federal government’s school feeding program.

For the 2026/2027 academic year, officials agreed to recruit and deploy 4,000 new teachers. The meeting also called for expansion of adult education programs and completion of registration and data collection for Qur’anic and Islamic schools.
On quality, participants agreed to enforce a ban on smartphone use in schools during learning hours, introduce national assessments for Grade 3 and Grade 6 students, review the national curriculum, and improve teacher training systems.
Officials further designated 2027 as a year dedicated to special training programs for teachers nationwide. They also pledged to strengthen cooperation between parents and school administrations to improve student discipline and behaviour.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to hold the next National Education Consultation Meeting in Las Anod, capital of the North East State. Participants called for increased investment and support for the education sector.
