Qatar, 19 January 2026 Somalia and Qatar signed a comprehensive defence cooperation agreement on Monday aimed at strengthening military ties and enhancing security coordination, according to a statement from the Somali Ministry of Defence.
The pact was signed in Doha by Somali Minister of Defence Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs, Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al Thani.
According to official statements, the agreement establishes a framework for military training, the exchange of military expertise, and the development of defence capabilities. It also focuses on strengthening security cooperation to support efforts to ensure regional stability and peace.

The deal comes at a pivotal moment for Somalia. Just last week, the Somali federal government announced the cancellation of all defence and security agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing concerns over national sovereignty and alleging that Abu Dhabi bypassed the federal government to engage directly with regional administrations.
“The signing of this agreement reflects the strong commitment of both countries to work jointly toward enhancing defence, security, and future military cooperation,” the ministry said in a statement.
Qatar has long been a key financial and diplomatic supporter of the Somali federal government. The latest military accord further cements Doha’s role as a primary security partner for Mogadishu as it continues its fight against the Al-Shabaab militant group.
