Pakistan, 24 January 2026 Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on strengthening early warning systems and disaster preparedness.
Speaking to Dawan Media from Pakistan SoDMA chairman, Mohamud Mo'alim Abdulle, said the agreement is of critical importance to Somalia in addressing climate-related disasters affecting the country.
“We are making strong efforts to help Somalia move out of the difficult situation it is facing. To achieve this, we are working toward signing a cooperation MoU with Pakistan’s NDMA. The agreement will allow us to benefit from their experience, especially in early climate warning systems, so that we can prevent disasters before they occur,” he said.
Abdulle, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, has already held talks with his counterpart, General Inam Haider Malik, at NDMA headquarters.

The two officials said the MoU will establish a framework for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and institutional capacity building, with NDMA Pakistan expected to support Somalia in developing early warning and rapid response systems.
SoDMA chairman also toured several NDMA facilities, reviewing advanced systems used to detect, forecast, and manage natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and climate-related emergencies.
Both agencies said the cooperation will be long-term and operational, focusing on strengthening disaster preparedness and response to improve the resilience and safety of communities in Somalia.
The move comes as Somalia faces increasingly frequent climate-related disasters, including droughts and floods, highlighting the urgent need for strong early warning systems and effective disaster risk reduction plans.
