Somalia, 11 May 2026 The opposition Somali Salvation Forum called for protests on Saturday, May 16, as political tensions rise in Mogadishu.
The protests will be held a day after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud marks four years in office since his election victory in 2022.
In a statement Monday, the forum said the new protest is part of a “peaceful struggle” against what it described as land grabbing, forced displacement and abuse of power.
The forum said it would not accept any attempt to restrict or dictate how the Somali people exercise their constitutional rights.

The group condemned the handling of the May 10 protests, accusing the federal government of blocking roads, disrupting public movement and deploying security officers around homes and offices of opposition leaders.
The announcement comes amid a political dispute over the government’s term, after Somalia’s parliament approved constitutional amendments in March 2026.
The opposition says the amendments could affect the electoral process and the tenure of government institutions. The constitutional changes have sparked political debate, with their interpretation still contested.
The forum also accused the president of inciting the public, referring to remarks he made on Sunday that the May 10 Mogadishu protects were intended to disrupt peace in Somalia.
