Maahaay, Somalia (Dawan Africa) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially laid the foundation for a new airport in northern Mogadishu on Sunday, marking the start of a $600 million investment under the ambitious "New Mogadishu Project."
The airport, set to be constructed in the Maahaay area, aims to alleviate the pressure on Aden Adde Airport, which currently handles 60% of Somalia’s air traffic. Designed to accommodate a significant increase in both domestic and international flights, the new facility is expected to double the airport’s current capacity, improving services for passengers and cargo alike.
"This project is crucial for the development and connectivity of the country, particularly in the area of air travel and the improvement of infrastructure," said President Mohamud. "He emphasized that this airport will be modern and will fully serve the Somali people and international flights to Somalia."

The new airport is part of a larger strategy to position Mogadishu as a key aviation and trade hub in East Africa. By enhancing travel and trade routes, the airport will connect Somalia to international markets, benefiting Somali businesses and attracting foreign investment.
With funding from both local Somali entrepreneurs and international investors, the project signals strong confidence in Somalia's economic future. The new airport will be integrated with a newly planned international port, located just 7 kilometers away, providing seamless connections between air and sea transport and boosting Somalia’s logistical capabilities.
The transformative initiative, part of the broader New Mogadishu Project launched in December 2024, aims to make Mogadishu a modern, well-planned, and environmentally sustainable city.
