Mogadishu, Somalia (Dawan Africa) – The government of Somalia has declared a victory in a battle against Al-Shabaab militants in the Hiiraan region on Sunday, June 22, 2025, with reports confirming the death of over 20 insurgents. The clash occurred in the areas of Mabaax and Gayacad, resulting from a joint operation between the Somali National Army (SNA) and local militia forces, known as Macawisley.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Information confirmed that the battle resulted in the death of numerous Al-Shabaab militants, with additional injuries reported. The SNA and Macawisley forces have vowed to continue their efforts to weaken the presence of Al-Shabaab in the region and eliminate any remaining militants.
“The armed forces and local heroes continue their operations to track down the remaining militants and eliminate the remnants of the Khawarij trying to escape,” the statement read.
The Somali government has reaffirmed its commitment to targeting Al-Shabaab across the country, with a focus on the Hiiraan region. The government aims to defeat the militant group and restore stability to areas affected by their presence.
