Mogadishu (Dawan Africa)– The Federal Government of Somalia has officially accused the Puntland administration of being involved in the hijacking of the SEA WORLD vessel, which was allegedly carrying military supplies for the TÜRKSOM Training Center in Mogadishu. In addition, the Somali government claimed that the vessel was transporting commercial goods owned by Somali traders. The government described the incident as a breach of Somalia’s interim constitution.
A statement issued today by Somalia’s Ministry of Information revealed that the vessel, which was en route to the port of Mogadishu, was carrying cargo in compliance with defense cooperation agreements between Somalia and Turkey. The Somali government strongly condemned the hijacking, branding it as a violation of the nation’s sovereignty and national security.
“The hijacking of this vessel, allegedly orchestrated by individuals linked to Puntland, represents a breach of Somalia’s Interim Constitution and undermines national unity, sovereignty, and stability,” the statement read.
The Somali government further emphasized that the hijacking, which it attributes to individuals associated with Puntland, contravenes international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which recognizes such acts as piracy.
The Federal Government has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the vessel, stressing that it was carrying legally sanctioned military cargo essential to Somalia’s defense and national security.
“The Federal Government demands the immediate release of the vessel and its cargo, while warning Puntland against continuing unlawful activities in Somali waters. The government will continue its efforts to combat piracy and ensure that those responsible for such acts are held accountable,” the statement continued.
This marks the first official response from the Somali government regarding the SEA WORLD vessel, which has been detained off the coast of Puntland since 18 July. Initially, Puntland authorities stated that the vessel was detained due to rough seas and that further investigations were underway.
