Somalia, 9 November 2025 —The Somali National Army (SNA) carried out operations against Al-Shabaab in South West State’s Bakool and Bay regions on Saturday night, killing several senior members of the militant group.
In a statement issued today, the Ministry of Defence outlined an operation in the village of Abal, 21 kilometers south of Hudur in Bakol, where Mohamed Abdi Mohamed Nur, known as Goofow, was killed.
Goofow, a senior Al-Shabaab commander and leader of the Abal base, was reportedly the mastermind behind numerous attacks targeting civilians.
The SNA operation also led to the discovery of weapons and documents revealing further plans to destabilize regional security.
A second operation took place in Waro Mintaaniya, 14 kilometers southeast of Burijet in Bay, where two Al-Shabaab operatives, Yahye (Abu Khalid) and Sharif (Amiir), were killed during a gunfight.
Yahye had been responsible for orchestrating several attacks, while Sharif died from injuries sustained in the fight.
The Ministry of Defence reiterated that military operations will continue to target and dismantle Al-Shabaab's network, ensuring no region remains under the group’s control.
“ongoing operations to stabilise the country will be intensified until every corner of Somalia is freed from the threat of terrorism,” the statement concluded.
Both Bakol and Bay remain key regions in Somalia's ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, with the militant group continuing to operate in rural areas despite significant military pressure.
