Awdhegle (Dawan Africa) – The Somali National Army (SNA) says its elite Danab Commandos, supported by international partners, have carried out a large-scale operation in Awdhegle, Lower Shabelle, targeting Al-Shabaab positions on Monday.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Defence, more than 100 Al-Shabaab fighters, including senior commanders, were killed also they said the operation took place overnight until yesterday morning. The military said tunnels and fortified hideouts used by the group were destroyed through precision airstrikes, while ground forces advanced to secure the area.
Intelligence cited by the Ministry suggested that Al-Shabaab had been preparing to counter the offensive, known as “Operation Silent Storm,” which is part of a broader campaign led by the Somali Army in cooperation with AUSOM forces. The statement described the strike as a heavy setback for the militants, coming after recent reported defeats in Sabid, Anole, and Barire.
“This strike dealt a heavy blow to the group, following a series of recent defeats in Sabid, anole, and Barire,” the Ministry of Defence said.
Authorities said the operation was aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab’s ability to fight, while also seeking to enhance civilian protection and improve security in areas long troubled by the insurgency.
