Kenya, 25 June 2026 – Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency and the Kenya Red Cross Society signed a three-year agreement to strengthen cooperation on disaster management, officials said on Thursday.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in Nairobi by SoDMA Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle and Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Ahmed Idris.
The agreement focuses on supporting communities living along the Somalia-Kenya border by improving early warning systems, risk analysis and the sharing of climate and emergency data.
The two sides also agreed to strengthen emergency response training, pre-position relief supplies and improve the capacity of teams responding to crises.

Officials said the agreement would support disaster preparedness, humanitarian response and recovery efforts, helping reduce the impact of emergencies on vulnerable communities.
Abdulle welcomed the agreement, saying it was important for strengthening cooperation between Somalia and Kenya and protecting people affected by disasters.
The agreement comes as communities along the Somalia-Kenya border continue to face recurring climate shocks, including droughts and floods, which have displaced families, disrupted livelihoods and increased demand for humanitarian assistance.
