Somalia, 5 August 2026 - Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Chairman Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle met with Plan International Director Reena Ghelani in Mogadishu on Wednesday to discuss the country’s humanitarian situation and ways to strengthen disaster preparedness.
The meeting focused on ongoing drought impacts in parts of Somalia, forecasts linked to the 2026 El Niño weather phenomenon, and concerns over potential locust outbreaks following the rainy season.
Chairman Moallin said Somalia continues to face major humanitarian needs and called on international partners to increase support for vulnerable communities affected by crises.

Ghelani said she had visited areas affected by humanitarian challenges, including Baidoa, where she witnessed the urgent needs facing local communities.
"The country is emerging from drought, but the humanitarian situation remains extremely fragile. An additional 500,000 people have been displaced, while economic shocks are disrupting supply chains and driving up food prices," the Plan International Director said.
She stressed the need for immediate humanitarian assistance and continued efforts to protect lives and reduce the impact of disasters on the Somali population.
