Kenya, April 13, 2026 - President William Ruto has moved to reassure Nyamira residents that their county will not be left out of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) expansion, announcing plans for a new station in Ikonge following concerns over its omission.
Speaking during a development tour in the area, the President confirmed that the government will construct a KSh300 million station to serve both passengers and cargo.
“I am the one who pushed for the railway from Naivasha to pass through Ikonge… I will build a KSh300 million railway station here,” Ruto said.
The announcement follows weeks of concern among residents, who feared that despite the railway passing through Nyamira, the county would miss out on a station—potentially limiting access to transport and economic opportunities.
Ruto said the planned station will open up the region, particularly for farmers and traders seeking more efficient ways to move goods.
“This station will help you transport people and goods… all the produce you want to move to Nairobi will be done through the SGR,” he said, urging locals to organise themselves to take advantage of the opportunity.

Initial project plans had listed stations in counties such as Narok, Bomet, Kericho, and Kisumu, leaving Nyamira without a stop despite the line passing through Ikonge, a move that drew criticism from local leaders.
The President dismissed the concerns, insisting the project will benefit the region and cautioning residents against “naysayers”.
Beyond the railway, Ruto outlined a broader development plan for the county, including road upgrades, improved healthcare facilities, and new markets.
For many residents, the SGR station remains the key focus, seen not just as infrastructure, but as a gateway to markets, mobility, and long-term economic growth.
