Somalia, 5 May 2026 Puntland State Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor met with World Food Programme officials in Garoowe to discuss drought response for vulnerable communities, his office said Tuesday.
The WFP delegation was led by the agency’s Deputy Executive Director, Matthew Hollingworth. The WFP Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa and the WFP Country Director for Somalia also attended the meeting.
The talks focused on the drought impact, declining international aid, child welfare and humanitarian projects in the region.

The Vice President thanked WFP for its work in Puntland and urged the agency to further strengthen cooperation with the regional administration.
Lugatoor stressed the need for donor organizations to channel aid directly to the administration to help accelerate emergency response efforts.
The meeting comes as recurrent droughts and a decline in international humanitarian funding continue to affect relief operations across Somalia.
