Garowe (Dawan Africa) – June 21, 2025 — The Puntland Regional State of Somalia has elected Cabdi Abdullahi Haashi Goley to fill the vacant seat in the Puntland Parliament left by the late former Senator Mohamed Ali Yusuf (Gaagaab), who passed away on December 3, 2024. Goley will represent the Mudug region, continuing the political legacy left by Gaagaab.
The election, which took place during the 6th session of the 56th sitting of the Puntland Parliament, saw Goley secure a decisive victory after his competitor, Cawil Ahmed Omar, withdrew from the race. Goley won the seat with 49 votes, with one member abstaining. The result was officially announced by the Speaker of the Puntland Parliament, Abdirisak Ahmed Said.
Commitment to Serving Puntland
Upon his election, Senator Goley expressed his gratitude and commitment to the people of Puntland. "I pledge to serve Puntland with sincerity and dignity, as outlined by both the Federal and Puntland Constitutions," Goley stated, emphasizing his dedication to integrity and his readiness to contribute to the region’s development.
Goley, born in Caabuqwaaq in 1960, has a longstanding history of public service. He began his basic education in his hometown before continuing his secondary schooling in Mogadishu. Goley joined the Somali Police Force in 1978 and participated in various military operations, further demonstrating his commitment to serving the Somali people throughout his career.
Puntland’s Political Landscape
The election of Goley comes at a time of continued political evolution within Puntland. As the region navigates its own political and constitutional challenges, Goley’s experience in law enforcement and military operations is seen as a valuable asset in tackling both security and governance issues.
His election fills a significant gap left by the passing of Gaagaab, and it remains to be seen how Goley will contribute to the ongoing political discourse in Puntland. His focus on upholding constitutional integrity is expected to play a central role in shaping the region’s legislative priorities.
